When the .NET universal domain name extension was first launched in 1985, along with the first domains on the World Wide Web, it was intended to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure firms. Given the fact that there were no particular prerequisites about the usage of the top-level domain extension, though, .NET domains were acquired and used for different purposes and by quite a few people. This extension is a perfect substitution for dot COM, particularly if the desirable domain with the latter TLD is not free for registration.
