A TXT record, as the abbreviation implies, is a record, that holds information in human-readable form and not code. It may be set up for a domain name or a subdomain for a number of purposes. Search engines like Yahoo, for example, have different ways of verifying that you're the owner of a certain domain name and one of them is actually by creating a TXT record with certain text which they provide and which you must use as the record value. The same verification method is used by some analytics platforms that monitor the traffic to your web sites as well. Of course, in such a case the content of the record is going to be read by a robot, but it will still be in human-readable form. A TXT record is furthermore used if you enable the so-called SPF protection for your e-mails so that you can prevent them from being forged. In cases like this, the record contains info showing that a given digital message is sent from a dependable and authorized mail server. You could use a TXT record for any type of other information also, just like your company details, as an example.
